Slime fans, get ready to get gooey!
We are excited to launch our monthly Slime Lab, hosted on the last Saturday of every month! This event is graciously supported by Stewarts Holiday Match Grant (www.stewartsshops.com/community-giving) where kids can create a different type of slime each month and customize it with mix-ins, scents, glitter, and charms. Every session includes a collectible badge, so families can come back and collect them all! Best part? Slime Lab is FREE with admission!

# Why Slime Matters: The Power of Sensory Play at CMOO’s Slime Lab

If you’ve ever watched a child stretch slime, swirl in glitter, or proudly show off their custom creation, you’ve seen sensory learning in action. What looks like simple play is actually doing important developmental work behind the scenes.

At the Children’s Museum of Oswego, our monthly Slime Lab was designed intentionally around the science of sensory play. Every scoop, squish, mix, and sparkle supports how children grow, learn, and connect with the world around them.

So why does slime matter so much?

## Sensory Play Builds Growing Brains

Sensory play activates multiple areas of the brain at once. When children touch, see, smell, and manipulate materials like slime, their brains form new neural connections that support memory, focus, problem-solving, and future academic learning.

Research shows that hands-on sensory experiences help strengthen the brain’s pathways that support higher-level thinking and learning readiness. When kids experiment with texture, pressure, and cause-and-effect during slime making, they’re literally building their brain’s wiring.

At Slime Lab, children aren’t just mixing ingredients. They’re observing changes, making predictions, adjusting their choices, and seeing real-time results. That’s early scientific thinking in action.

## Fine Motor Skills Get a Workout

Slime is a fantastic tool for strengthening fine motor skills. Pinching, stretching, stirring, kneading, and pulling all help develop the small muscles in the hands and fingers that children use for writing, cutting, buttoning, and everyday independence.

Our tabletop mixers, scoops, measuring tools, and add-ins encourage children to practice coordination and hand strength while staying engaged and excited. It feels like play, but their hands are learning important control and precision skills.

## Language and Communication Naturally Grow

Sensory play invites conversation. Children describe what they feel, smell, and see. They compare textures, colors, and results with friends and caregivers. Words like “stretchy,” “sparkly,” “smooth,” and “squishy” expand vocabulary and expressive language.

During Slime Lab, families often hear kids explaining their process: what they added, how it changed, and what they might try next time. These moments build confidence in communication and storytelling.

## Emotional Regulation and Calm Focus

Sensory experiences can be grounding and calming for many children. The rhythmic motion of kneading slime or slowly stretching it provides gentle sensory input that helps children regulate emotions, manage energy levels, and improve focus.

For some kids, sensory play offers a peaceful way to reset and concentrate. For others, it provides a safe outlet for movement and exploration. Slime meets kids where they are.

## Creativity and Confidence Flourish

Slime Lab encourages children to make choices and express creativity. They choose their colors, scents, glitter, and mix-ins. No two slimes look the same, and that’s exactly the point.

When children see their ideas come to life, they build confidence, independence, and pride in their work. Collecting badges each month adds an extra layer of motivation and goal-setting, helping children develop perseverance and excitement for return visits.

## Social Skills Grow Through Shared Experiences

Slime Lab is also a social experience. Kids learn to take turns, share materials, wait patiently, collaborate, and celebrate each other’s creations. These moments strengthen cooperation, empathy, and communication skills.

Parents often notice kids making new friends while comparing colors or helping each other mix. Learning happens naturally through play and connection.

## Learning That Feels Like Fun

Slime Lab blends sensory play, creativity, STEAM learning, and joyful exploration into one experience. It’s messy in the best way, purposeful without feeling structured, and accessible for a wide range of ages and abilities.

Each month introduces a new slime texture, encouraging repeat visits and ongoing curiosity. The collectible badges turn learning into an adventure kids want to continue.

Best of all, Slime Lab is free with admission, making high-quality hands-on learning accessible to families in our community thanks to the generous support of our sponsor, Constellation.

## Come Experience the Science of Play

Join us the last Saturday of every month for Slime Lab. Kids will mix, customize, explore, and create while building skills that support lifelong learning.

Because sometimes the most powerful learning starts with getting a little gooey.
