STEAM on the Scene is the Children's Museum of Oswego's growing outreach initiative, bringing the excitement of hands-on learning beyond our museum walls and directly into the communities we serve. Through interactive activities centered around science, technology, engineering, art, and math, we create engaging experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving for children and families wherever they are.

From community festivals and farmers' markets to school events, libraries, parks, and neighborhood celebrations, STEAM on the Scene is expanding opportunities for families to experience the power of play in places they already gather.

As the program continues to grow, our vision is to transform STEAM on the Scene into a fully equipped mobile museum, allowing us to bring larger exhibits, immersive learning stations, and high-quality educational programming to communities throughout Oswego County and beyond. By removing barriers to access and meeting families where they are, we're creating new opportunities for every child to learn, create, discover, and explore through the power of play.

Where are we next

STEAM on the Scene: 6th grade Rube Goldberg Challenge

As part of our STEAM on the Scene initiative, the Children's Museum of Oswego partnered with the Oswego City School District to enhance the sixth grade physical science curriculum by bringing concepts of energy, force, and motion to life through hands-on learning.

Museum educators visited every sixth grade classroom in the district, guiding students through the science behind chain reactions before challenging them to work collaboratively to design and build their own Rube Goldberg machines. The project encouraged students to apply classroom concepts while strengthening critical thinking, creativity, engineering design, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Each classroom selected a winning team to represent their class, and those teams advanced to compete for the title of overall district champion. The challenge not only reinforced important science standards but also gave students an exciting opportunity to showcase their innovation and celebrate the many ways science and engineering come together through creativity and play.

STEAM on the Scene: 3rd Grade Weather & Climate Program

Through our STEAM on the Scene initiative, the Children's Museum of Oswego partnered with the Oswego City School District to enrich the third grade science curriculum with an engaging, hands-on learning experience focused on weather and climate.

Every third grade class visited the museum for a full-day experience that included a one-hour interactive lesson followed by two hours of field trip exploration throughout the museum. During the lesson, students investigated the water cycle, explored the unique ways Lake Ontario influences our local weather, and participated in collaborative activities that encouraged them to observe, ask questions, make hypotheses, and think like scientists. By working together to analyze weather, students developed a deeper understanding of the scientific processes that shape the world around them.

The program combined classroom learning with hands-on discovery, reinforcing New York State Science Learning Standards while fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a lasting appreciation for science through meaningful, play-based experiences
